Teach When You Retire

When one of our Assistant Scoutmasters was teaching some of the Scouts how to conduct a flag ceremony and handle the American flag, he asked a question to which EVERYONE knows the answer.

"What do you do when an American flag touches the ground?"

Everyone replied, "Burn it."  It seems like if there's anything anyone knows about the flag, it's that you burn it when it touches the ground.  The ASM went on.

"You pick it up."

Sorry, folks.  Stop gathering wood and putting fluid on the charcoal.  It takes more than just a little dirt to retire an American flag.  In Austin, John Knox had a flag that was ready to retire after years of service, so he turned it into an opportunity to teach his Scouts all about it.  Read about Mr. Knox and his retirement (of the flag) here.
